[Minnesota Passes Legislation Banning 'AI Deepfake Nudity' Applications]
According to Decrypt, the Minnesota State Legislature has passed a bill prohibiting websites and applications from offering AI tools capable of generating realistic fake nude images of identifiable individuals. The bill has been sent to Governor Tim Walz for signing. The legislation mandates that platforms must not allow users to use or facilitate the use of 'nudity-generating' tools, and advertising or promotion of such services is also prohibited. Victims can sue operators for actual damages and claim up to triple damages and punitive compensation. The state attorney general may impose civil fines of up to $500,000 per violation, with the fines allocated to support services for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse. If signed, the new law will take effect on August 1 and will only apply to cases occurring after that date.
