a16z Crypto: The term 'stablecoin' might gradually become outdated
Robert Hackett, Special Projects Lead at a16z Crypto, wrote that the term 'stablecoin' may be becoming outdated.
He pointed out that stablecoins originally emerged during periods of high volatility in the crypto market, emphasizing their 'stability' attribute. However, as they evolve into global financial infrastructure, the focus has shifted from 'whether they are stable' to 'what else can be built.'
In his view, stability has become a baseline requirement rather than the innovation itself. In the future, the concept of 'stablecoin' might fade away, replaced by broader terms like 'digital dollar' or 'on-chain assets,' or even fully integrated into the underlying financial system.
