Germany, and most of Europe, has been free-riding off of the generosity of the USA for more than 70 years. They went for decades underfunding their defense spending within NATO, instead spending their budgets on a generous welfare state. Another area where Europe has abused the USA is in pharma research and drug pricing. The US government funds nearly 50% of new pharma drug research. Then Germany and other European countries impose price controls for their citizens, getting cheap drugs. That resulted in American patients paying much higher prices to keep pharma profits high. It wasn't until Donald Trump came along that he started changing the rules. He forced Europeans to start funding their own defense. Now Trump is going after the pharma pricing abuse also, focused on getting better pricing for Americans and halting the abuse by Germany and other European countries.(Wall Street Mav)
