In the drama between Musk and OpenAI, the evidence seems to support Musk's side. The court revealed a 2017 email exchange between the two co-founders, Musk and Sam Altman.
At the time, Musk's stance was very clear: either become completely independent or continue as a nonprofit organization. He stated, 'I’ve already invested a lot of money in you.'
Sam Altman’s reply was, 'I still support staying nonprofit.'
But in the same month, another OpenAI co-founder, Greg Brockman, secretly wrote in his journal that if, three months later, they transitioned into a profit-driven company, then telling people they were a nonprofit from the start would have been a lie.
As for what happened next, everyone knows the story. OpenAI became a revenue-generating commercial company, kept raising funds, kept spinning stories, and kept selling shares. Meanwhile, the money Musk had invested? These guys just pretended it didn’t exist.
