The White House says Iran's proposal is under discussion
The White House stated that Iran's proposal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz is currently being discussed by senior U.S. officials.
Spokesperson Caroline Leavitt told reporters: 'I can confirm that the President met with his national security team this morning. The meeting may still be ongoing or may have already concluded, and the proposal was under discussion at that time.'
Trump insists Tehran must never possess nuclear weapons, and Leavitt emphasized that his red line on the Iran issue has been made very, very clear.
A former senior U.S. official questioned the legitimacy of Iran's alleged proposal to the U.S., which involves reopening the Strait of Hormuz and ending the war, but does not include restarting new nuclear negotiations.
Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Mark Kimmitt stated that the Iranians 'created a bit of a judo-style clever maneuver by dragging the Strait of Hormuz into the entire conflict.'
'Now they are trying to use the Strait of Hormuz issue as leverage to delay further negotiations, which makes no sense at all. I don’t think the Americans will accept it,' Kimmitt told Al Jazeera.
