People slept on Parasite Eve (1998). After Square (SquareSoft) had so much success with FF VII, the dev team was allowed to do a wild card project blending RPG elements with horror and cinematic elements. The result was PE. Did you know Parasite Eve was originally a book? Then made into a financially unsuccessful movie? And the movie had a musical score composed by Joe Hisaishi? The same Joe Hisaishi who does all the Ghibli movies? Square secured the rights to the IP and made the game as a spiritual successor to the movies and films.
It ended up selling 2M or so copies but most people in North America know it because if included an additional demo disk containing a playable demo of FF VIII.
It was a good game. Square’s first M rated game adding in horror elements drawing inspiration from Resident Evil but putting it in an RPG. They took a bold risk. People hadn’t seen something cinematic the way PE was before. The game also featured a female lead, rare at the time.
The opening Opera scene is still iconic (will post in the reply).
Worth a look if you like retro things.(Autism Capital 🧩)
