[WSJ: UAE Requests Wartime Financial Assistance from the U.S.] BlockBeats News, April 20, according to a WSJ report, U.S. officials stated that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has initiated discussions with the United States to seek financial support in case a potential war with Iran plunges the oil-rich nation into a deeper crisis. Officials revealed that UAE Central Bank Governor Khaled Balama met last week in Washington with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, as well as officials from the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve, to propose the idea of a currency swap. The UAE emphasized that, so far, they have not been significantly impacted by the most severe economic effects of the conflict but may still require financial assistance. UAE officials have not formally requested a currency swap. Such a measure would allow the UAE Central Bank to access U.S. dollars at low cost to support its currency or replenish foreign exchange reserves during a liquidity crisis. U.S. officials noted that during recent talks with the U.S., the UAE described the proposal as preliminary and precautionary.
