[US Media: Strait Reopens and Then Suddenly Closes Again, Reflecting Internal Divisions in Iran]
Golden Finance reported on April 19 that The Wall Street Journal stated Iran's swift reversal on its announcement regarding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has exposed growing divisions between the country's political leadership and its hardline military factions. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi announced on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz was "fully open." However, this statement quickly sparked a strong backlash within Tehran.
A recording obtained by the newspaper revealed that a person claiming to be a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy stated via maritime radio broadcast that the strait remained closed and that vessels would need permission to pass. "We will open the strait based on the orders of our leader, not based on some childish tweets," the individual said. A crew member noted that other ships were responding to this warning.
Around the same time, the Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, also criticized the foreign minister's announcement of the policy on social media. The agency stated, "The Foreign Ministry should reconsider this method of communication." Senior hardline lawmaker Morteza Mahmoudi called for Araghchi's removal, claiming his statement caused oil prices to drop and handed a gift to the United States.
