[Meta Plans to Launch First Round of Large-Scale Layoffs This Year on May 20]
According to a report by Golden Finance on April 18, three sources familiar with the matter revealed that Meta Platforms (META.O) is planning to implement its first round of large-scale layoffs this year on May 20, with further layoffs to follow. One of the sources stated that as part of the first round of layoffs, the company will cut approximately 10% of its global workforce, roughly close to 8,000 employees. The company also plans to conduct additional layoffs in the second half of this year, though specific timing and scale details have yet to be finalized. The source added that management may adjust the plan based on developments in artificial intelligence capabilities.
This year's layoffs at Meta will be the largest since the company's restructuring during the "Year of Efficiency" from late 2022 to early 2023, during which approximately 21,000 positions were eliminated. This time, the company's financial situation is more stable, but management envisions leveraging artificial intelligence to assist employees in achieving fewer management layers and higher efficiency in the future.
According to the latest disclosure, as of December 31 last year, Meta had approximately 79,000 employees.
