[Hong Kong Woman Scammed in Online Romance by 'Cryptocurrency Investment Expert,' Losing Over HK$2 Million] BlockBeats News, April 13: According to disclosures from the Hong Kong Police's 'CyberDefender' platform, a case of online romance fraud resulting in a single loss exceeding HK$2 million occurred in the past week. Reportedly, the scammer proactively followed a 50-year-old female victim on Instagram, initiating contact through comments on posts and quickly establishing a romantic relationship. The scammer then claimed to be a 'cryptocurrency investment expert' and used the lure of 'guaranteed profits with no losses' to carry out the fraud. The perpetrator first requested the victim to transfer HK$40,000 as an 'account opening fee,' then guided her to exchange cash for USDT at physical exchange shops in seven separate transactions and transfer the funds via an electronic wallet to the scammer's account. Once the funds were secured, the scammer immediately 'disappeared' and cut off contact. Police remind citizens to exercise caution when forming online relationships. If someone claims to be an investment expert and requests transfers for any reason, stop immediately and think carefully.
