The recently concluded 47th Bangkok International Motor Show might be a turning point: total bookings at the Bangkok Motor Show exceeded 130,000 vehicles, and for the first time, Chinese brands surpassed Japanese brands in total bookings in Thailand. Among the top ten spots for bookings, Chinese brands claimed seven, while only Toyota and Honda managed to hold their ground among Japanese brands. Long-established carmakers like Suzuki and Subaru failed to make it into the top ten. This signals a rapid decline in the dominance of Japanese cars in the Southeast Asian market.
As of January this year, the combined market share of Chinese brands in Thailand reached 47.34%, narrowly surpassing Japanese brands (47.338%) for the first time. Particularly in the Thai market for newly sold electric vehicles, Chinese brands accounted for over 80%.
