[Adam Back: Bitcoin's Quantum Threat Is Distant, but the Migration Window Has Opened]
Odaily Planet Daily News – Blockstream CEO Adam Back stated in an interview with Bloomberg that quantum computers currently do not pose a practical threat to the Bitcoin network, but the industry should begin preparations immediately. He noted that current hardware generally lacks error correction capabilities, making quantum risks a long-term challenge rather than an imminent crisis. Adam Back emphasized that the core issue is not reaching a consensus on when quantum computers will become sufficiently threatening, but rather providing Bitcoin holders with a roughly ten-year window to migrate their keys to quantum-resistant formats.
He mentioned that a research team of 20 people is already working on this, publishing papers and conducting practical deployments, with Blockstream's Liquid Network being used as an early testing platform. Furthermore, post-quantum cryptography has moved from the theoretical stage to the implementation stage, with NIST set to finalize relevant standards by the end of 2024. The main challenge facing the industry is how to coordinate and complete an orderly migration before the risks become urgent.
