[CZ's New Book Recalls the Theft of 7,000 Bitcoins: Once Considered Forking Bitcoin] BlockBeats News, April 8 — In his new book *Binance Life*, CZ reflects on the 2019 incident where the platform lost 7,000 Bitcoins: In May 2019, CZ received a report from Binance's security team stating that malicious software had been discovered on employees' laptops and servers. A few hours later, all 7,000 Bitcoins in the hot wallet were stolen. In the book, CZ candidly admits, 'The moment the malware was discovered, all systems should have been shut down immediately. This lesson came at a heavy cost.' Faced with this rare large-scale hacking incident in the industry, CZ briefly considered rolling back the Bitcoin network. However, he ultimately abandoned the idea due to 'the immense difficulty of coordinating miners and the inability to accept a Bitcoin fork caused by Binance.' In the end, CZ decided to activate the "SAFU User Protection Fund." This decision directly consumed approximately one-quarter of the SAFU fund's reserves at the time (around $220 million) but successfully prevented a platform-wide bank run. Subsequent investigations revealed that the hackers had employed a combination of phishing, viruses, and other sophisticated methods.
