[US Media: Iranian Speaker Threatens to Cut Off Maritime Traffic in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait]
BlockBeats News, April 5 – According to a report on the NBC News website on April 3, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf appeared to threaten to block commercial shipping traffic in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical chokepoint in the Red Sea.
Reportedly, Ghalibaf posted on the social platform X, stating: 'How much of the world's oil, liquefied natural gas, wheat, rice, and fertilizer transportation passes through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait?' He continued, 'Which countries and companies account for the highest proportion of goods transported through this strait?'
In recent years, ships passing through this region have repeatedly been attacked by Yemen's Houthi armed group, which is allied with the Iranian regime. The threat concerning the Bab el-Mandeb Strait comes at a time when Iran has already largely disrupted maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has plunged the global economy into chaos.
