Google DeepMind releases Gemma 4 series open-source models. This series adopts the fully commercial licensed Apache 2.0 protocol, and the underlying technology is based on its proprietary model Gemini 3 research framework. This is the open-source base model with the highest parameter utilization rate by Google so far, which directly results in the large-scale deployment of enterprise level AI with complex reasoning capabilities to local hardware, cutting off the revenue path of some mid-range cloud computing power providers. Gemma 4 includes four versions: E2B and E4B at the performance level, the mixed expert model (MoE) at 26 ° B, and the dense model (Dense) at 31 ° B. Test data shows that the 31B model ranks third globally in the Arena AI Text Ranking as an open-source model, while the 26A model ranks sixth. In terms of technical specifications, the entire series natively supports visual input, E2B/E4B adds audio recognition function, and the context window is extended to 256K, covering more than 140 languages. End side deployment data shows that the 4-bit quantized E2B only requires 5GB of memory to run, and the inference speed on Android devices is four times faster than the previous generation, with a 60% reduction in battery consumption. Since the release of the first generation of this product line, its total online downloads have reached 400 million times. This decentralization of computing power directly squeezes the survival space of middle tier AI enterprises. The Apache 2.0 protocol allows developers to use it for commercial monetization with zero licensing fees, which deprives startups that rely on providing 30B level closed source API calls for a living of pricing power. Ironically, although Gemma 4 defeated OpenAI's open source competitors in various tests, data from investment institutions and industry benchmarks show that: Its actual performance in the arena still lags behind China's top models such as DeepSeek and Alibaba's Qwen 3.5, and Google's attempt to establish a technological monopoly in the open source ecosystem has not been truly established.
