[Coinbase Launches Internal Venture Program 'Next Bets' to Prevent Talent and Idea Loss]
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed in an interview that the company has launched an internal venture program called 'Next Bets,' aimed at preventing the loss of promising ideas and top-tier talent. The program opens twice a year for company-wide proposal submissions, allowing employees to directly submit project plans to a review panel composed of product leaders. Projects can move forward as long as they receive funding approval from any one of the leaders, operating similarly to an internal venture capital model.
Armstrong stated that the mechanism was inspired by the experience of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak leaving Hewlett-Packard due to a lack of internal support for his ideas. The goal is to retain high-potential ideas and talent. The 'Next Bets' program is typically driven by small teams of two to three people, with relatively modest funding but focused on high-potential, innovation-friendly projects. The Base blockchain project originated from this program, and updates on new projects will be announced in the coming weeks.
