Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. have urged the CFTC and the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) to warn federal officials against using insider government information to place bets on prediction markets. According to a statement from Elizabeth Warren's office on March 30, over 40 lawmakers stated that under the current Commodity Exchange Act and STOCK Act, it is illegal for federal employees to use non-public information for such trades. They also called on the two agencies to clarify whether investigations into these actions have been initiated. This move comes amid recent unusual bets on prediction market platforms related to events in Venezuela, Iran, and others, sparking concerns that government information may be exploited for trading profits.
