Bitcoin is getting harder to mine, and the output is getting smaller. According to the design, when it's almost fully mined, transaction fees should cover miners' costs. But the Bitcoin ecosystem is struggling—no ecosystem means no transaction fees. Maybe the Bitcoin chain will heat up again in the future.
