[U.S. Jury Finds Meta and Google Liable in Social Media Addiction Case]
On March 25 local time, a U.S. jury ruled that Meta Platforms Inc. and Google were liable in a social media addiction lawsuit and ordered the two companies to pay $3 million in damages. The case was brought by a 20-year-old woman who accused the social media products created by these companies of being highly addictive. She claimed that as a child, she became addicted to YouTube, a video platform under Google, and Instagram, a platform under Meta, due to their attention-grabbing designs, which led to her developing anxiety and depression. The jury found that Meta and Google were negligent in the design of these two applications and failed to provide adequate warnings about their potential harms. Meta subsequently stated that it disagreed with the verdict, with its legal team "evaluating legal options." Google has not yet commented. (CCTV News)
