[Ethereum Foundation Releases Quantum-Resistant Upgrade Roadmap, Initial Upgrade Expected by 2029]
The Ethereum Foundation has officially released a quantum-resistant upgrade roadmap, aiming to complete the initial upgrade of the L1 protocol by 2029, with the full execution layer migration to be advanced in the following years. The roadmap includes four hard forks: the 'I' fork introduces quantum-resistant public keys, the 'J' fork reduces Gas costs for verifying quantum-resistant signatures, the 'L' fork compresses the blockchain state into zero-knowledge proofs, and the 'M' fork provides quantum-resistant protection for Layer 2 networks. The foundation estimates that quantum computers capable of posing cryptographic threats are still 8 to 12 years away and has established a dedicated quantum research team.
