[Epic Games, Developer of 'Fortnite,' Announces Massive Layoffs, Claims Unrelated to AI]
Reported by Jinse Finance, on March 25, Epic Games announced on Tuesday that it will lay off over 1,000 employees. The company's CEO, Tim Sweeney, also addressed external concerns regarding artificial intelligence.
In a memo simultaneously released to employees, Sweeney wrote: 'Since everyone is discussing this issue, I want to clarify that the layoffs are unrelated to AI. With AI enhancing productivity, we actually hope to have more talented developers to create high-quality content and technology.'
The company stated that the layoffs are part of a broader cost-cutting plan. Additionally, by reducing outsourcing contracts, cutting marketing expenses, and pausing recruitment for certain positions, the company has saved over $500 million.
Tim Sweeney compared the current moment to pivotal transformation periods in the company's history, such as the shift from 2D games to 3D games in the 1990s and the later transition to online games like 'Fortnite.'
