This hands-on approach has helped xAI secure business from payment company Shift4 Payments. Shift4 CEO Taylor Lauber stated that the company plans to gradually phase out OpenAI's ChatGPT in favor of xAI's Grok, while continuing to use Anthropic's Claude for code development. It is worth noting, however, that Shift4 is not purely a market-driven client acquisition. The company's founder, Jared Isaacman, is an ally of Musk and previously completed the world's first commercial spacewalk aboard a SpaceX spacecraft. He currently serves as a NASA director. SpaceX's Starlink is also a client of Shift4. Since its establishment three years ago, xAI's clients have primarily been concentrated within Musk-affiliated companies such as Tesla and SpaceX, as well as government agencies. Bloomberg highlights that xAI's on-site strategy reflects a broader trend in the AI industry: OpenAI and Anthropic are similarly deploying engineers to assist clients with implementation, and OpenAI is collaborating with private equity firms to establish a dedicated 'deployment department.'
