As a former federal prosecutor who’s overseen investigations related to claims of excessive force by police offices, including police shootings, this arrest and prosecution reeks of politics.
I don’t know all the facts but I know this: the police officer was arrested and charged with manslaughter only 8 days after the shooting. EIGHT DAYS!
It is highly unlikely that a proper, thorough and adequate investigation can be conducted in a criminal homicide case in 8 days. To do a proper investigation in a case like this you usually wait for forensic expert reports like ballistics and bullet trajectory analysis reports, video reconstruction using body cam footage and any other possible recordings (phone recordings by bystanders, street or business cameras or RING cameras), extensive autopsy and toxicology reports.
Now, it’s possible, sometimes, that the body cam footage is so overwhelming that it clearly shows an unjustifiable shooting/killing, making an arrest and charging the officer, with criminal homicide, 8 days after, reasonable. If so, release the video footage.
Cops put their lives on the line every day to provide public safety. At a minimum, they deserve a fair non-rushed full and complete investigation.
With all the animosity towards ICE, including fatal shootings elsewhere, it’s difficult to believe that politics hasn’t played a roll in what seems like a rush to judgment. Release the body cam footage and if it clearly shows an unjustified killing, I’ll be the first to call it that.
A man lost his life. An officer is on trial now for his. The way they’re handling this is wrong.(John E Deaton)
