[80-Year-Old American Loses Nearly $285,000 to Scam, Funds Converted to Cryptocurrency, Sues Charles Schwab]
BlockBeats News, March 20: According to Business Insider, 80-year-old New York investor George Chryssanthou fell victim to a telecom scam, losing approximately $285,000. The scammers, posing as Microsoft tech support personnel, gained remote access to his computer and persuaded him to wire transfer funds multiple times to a Coinbase account during January 2025. The funds were subsequently converted into Bitcoin and transferred.
The victim has filed a negligence claim with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) against Charles Schwab, alleging that the brokerage firm failed to identify and prevent these abnormal high-frequency, large-sum transfers. The total amount involved in the scam was $284,650, with individual transfers ranging from $18,000 to $90,000.
