[UK Government Withdraws AI Copyright Default Usage Proposal, Creators Call It a Major Victory]
Odaily Planet Daily News: The UK government has announced the abandonment of its previous proposal that allowed AI companies to default to using copyrighted content for model training under an 'opt-out' framework. The proposal had sparked widespread opposition, including from Elton John, Dua Lipa, and the UK House of Lords. UK Technology Minister Liz Kendall stated that the government has listened to various opinions and will no longer pursue the proposal. A report released concurrently noted that there is still no consensus on how to balance creators' rights with the development of the AI industry. UK Music CEO Tom Kiehl called this move a 'major victory.' However, the UK government has yet to propose an alternative plan and stated that it will not amend existing copyright laws until it is confirmed that reforms can achieve economic and social goals. Meanwhile, tech industry groups are concerned that the prolonged lack of clear regulations could weaken the UK's position in global competition. (BBC)
