Here’s a fun fact: Tencent is the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world with $2.2 trillion in assets under management. It’s also the top Chinese stock holding of Norway’s pension fund, which owns a whopping $9.5 billion worth of Tencent shares, accounting for 1.35% of the company. Of course, their cost basis is super low—they started buying Tencent stock consistently back in 2008 and went all-in by 2017, even making it into their global top 10 holdings list at one point. At its peak, their return on investment exceeded 50x, with profits surpassing $8 billion. Considering Norway’s population is only 5 million, that’s nearly $2,000 in pension money per person thanks to Tencent.
Unfortunately, due to regulations set by Norway’s parliament and Ministry of Finance, the government pension fund can only invest in four sectors: stocks, bonds, real estate, and renewable energy infrastructure. Investing in Bitcoin is strictly off-limits.
