[Vitalik Clarifies Relationship with AI Safety Organization FLI, Explains Differences in Views on AI Risk] Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin posted on social media to clarify his stance regarding a large donation he made years ago to the Future of Life Institute (FLI) and to elaborate on the similarities and differences between their views on AI risks. Vitalik stated that in 2021, he received a large amount of SHIB and other tokens, which had a peak market value exceeding $1 billion. He quickly converted part of it into ETH and donated it to relatively 'normal' organizations, while donating the remaining half of the SHIB to FLI. At the time, FLI proposed a comprehensive roadmap addressing risks in areas such as biology, nuclear energy, and AI, as well as promoting peace and understanding. FLI ultimately realized about $500 million from the donation, but later shifted its internal strategy to focus on cultural and political actions as its primary approach. Vitalik expressed concerns about large-scale coordinated political actions, believing they could lead to unintended consequences, resulting in solutions that are coercive and fragile. He pointed out that regulations targeting dangerous technologies often grant exemptions to national security agencies, which themselves are a major source of risk. Vitalik advocates for the d/acc path, which involves developing open-source technologies to help humanity survive safely, and has allocated approximately $40 million recently toward such initiatives. At the same time, he acknowledged that FLI's recent efforts, such as supporting the 'AI for Humanity Declaration,' represent a positive philosophical direction.
