[ECB Officials Say Probability of Rate Hike Rises, But Action Should Not Be Rushed]
Jin10 News, March 10 – European Central Bank Governing Council member Müller stated that the likelihood of a rate hike in the near term has increased, but officials should not rush to react to the Iran war and its impacts. He said: 'The probability of the next policy rate adjustment is now leaning more toward an increase rather than a decrease. This probability may have risen in recent weeks.'
However, he also emphasized that the ECB should 'not make any hasty decisions.' 'We should first observe whether the current surge in energy prices is merely temporary.'
As the Middle East conflict drives energy prices to soar, traders have increased their bets on monetary policy tightening. But after previously pricing in two rate hikes this year, each by 25 basis points, those bets have retreated to less than one hike following Trump's suggestion that the conflict may soon end.
ECB Governing Council member Simkus also warned against acting hastily. He said: 'Stay calm and avoid overreacting, as the situation is still unfolding. If the conflict persists and spreads, it will not only impact inflation but also have broader effects on the Middle East and Europe.'
