[Moldova Investigates Cryptocurrency Interference in 2025 Parliamentary Elections]
The Moldovan National Anti-Corruption Center (CNA) has uncovered a plan to use cryptocurrency to influence the 2025 parliamentary elections, involving a total of $107 million. CNA Director Alexandr Pinzari stated that the plan involves complex transactions through non-custodial crypto wallets, transferring virtual assets to intermediaries in Moldova, who then convert them into cash to bribe voters, promote candidates, and mobilize rally participants. The funds have been traced back to two centralized crypto platforms in Russia and Kyrgyzstan. Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs has linked this activity to the "Russian-backed foreign influence operation InfoLider" and identified the Kyrgyzstan-based exchange TokenSpot as one of the transaction sources. TokenSpot was previously identified as a potential front company for the sanctioned Russian exchange Garantex, both of which are closely tied to the "Kremlin-backed sanctions evasion ecosystem."
