[Vitalik Proposes Replacing Casper FFG with Minimmit as Ethereum's Finality Mechanism] According to a report by Jinse Finance, Vitalik Buterin posted on the X platform suggesting replacing Ethereum's current finality component, Casper FFG, with a new mechanism called Minimmit. He explained that Casper FFG uses a two-round finality mechanism (requiring validators to sign twice to complete 'proof' and 'final confirmation'), whereas Minimmit achieves finality with just one round of signatures. As a trade-off, Minimmit's fault tolerance threshold would decrease from Casper FFG's 33% to approximately 17%. Despite the lower fault tolerance ratio, Minimmit is more likely to push the network into a state of 'multi-chain competition rather than erroneous final confirmation' in various attack or client vulnerability scenarios. This state is easier to recover from through community coordination. Vitalik believes that compared to erroneous blocks being finalized, a short-term lack of finality is safer and more recoverable. Therefore, he suggests that Minimmit might offer better overall security trade-offs.
