10 years ago, the term 'indie developer' was so beautiful. Designers who could write react.js were as rare as pandas. As long as your product could satisfy a niche market and be self-sufficient, you could live as a digital nomad—today in Canggu, tomorrow in Chiang Mai. Geo-arbitrage was awesome.
But now, this term has lost all its scarcity, and the premium is gone. Anyone can go from idea to product launch, and even a $200/month max subscription is more than enough. You say aesthetics matter, but even Coconut Palm Coconut Juice has its audience. You think it’s low? Commercially, not at all.
When the marginal cost of building products approaches zero, a lot of long-tail demands that nobody wanted to tackle before can now be met.
Take, for example, people who collect vintage mechanical calculators (like the handheld Curta calculators). Globally, there might only be three or four hundred active collectors. They need a dedicated platform for collection management and parts exchange, including exploded diagrams for each model, wear-and-tear rating standards, historical serial number databases, etc. But this market is so small that no commercial company would bother. 300 people, each paying you $30/month for a subscription—would you do it?
