[Canadian Police Warn: Scammers Impersonate Royal Canadian Mounted Police to Conduct Secondary Scams on Crypto Victims]
According to Decrypt, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has warned that scammers are using its insignia to target victims who have previously suffered losses in crypto fraud with a new round of 'fund recovery scams.' The police reported a case in Nanaimo, British Columbia: a resident lost approximately CAD 5,000 late last year in a remote stock trading recruitment scam. Earlier this year, the same individual was targeted by scammers posing as lawyers, claiming to have found two crypto accounts associated with the victim and promising to recover about CAD 60,000 in profits. The promotional materials suggested involvement by the RCMP.
The police emphasized that the RCMP does not contact individuals regarding discovered crypto accounts, does not collaborate with private companies to recover funds, and does not request payment to investigate fraud. Security experts noted that this tactic exploits authority bias, with scam groups often reusing information obtained in earlier scams, making previous victims more valuable targets for secondary scams.
