[Anthropic CEO Resumes AI Contract Negotiations with U.S. Department of Defense]
Odaily Planet Daily reports that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei is in negotiations with U.S. Department of Defense Under Secretary for Research and Engineering Emil Michael, seeking to reach a compromise on the terms of the Pentagon's use of Anthropic AI models. The negotiations had previously broken down last week. In an internal memo, Amodei stated that during the final stages of the talks, the Department of Defense proposed removing the clause regarding 'bulk data analysis acquisition' from the contract, which is a core safeguard for Anthropic to prevent its AI from being used for large-scale domestic surveillance. Anthropic's red lines include prohibiting the use of AI for large-scale domestic surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons. Amodei also mentioned in the memo that some statements from the Pentagon and OpenAI were inaccurate and hinted that Anthropic was being sidelined due to its lack of praise for Trump. Previously, U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth had threatened to classify Anthropic as a supply chain risk, a move that would force companies in the military supply chain to sever ties with Anthropic. Anthropic secured a $200 million contract with the Department of Defense last July, becoming the first AI model used in classified environments and national security agencies. (FT)
