In speaking about Jamaica’s housing challenge, I explained that financing alone will not fix the problem. Yes, many Jamaicans need help with deposits and mortgages, and the NHT plays an important role in that. But if we make it easier for everyone to borrow money without increasing the number of houses available, prices will simply go up because more people are competing for too few homes. The real issue is supply. We are not building enough houses at the scale the country needs. Small developments are not enough, Jamaica needs thousands of homes being built at once. Land is also a major constraint. Not all land is suitable or affordable to develop, especially when you factor in roads, water, electricity and proximity to jobs. That is why we are focusing on large, master-planned developments like Greater Bernard Lodge and Greater Innswood in St. Catherine, designed to deliver thousands of homes. We are tackling land, infrastructure and approvals at the same time so we can significantly increase housing output.(Andrew Holness)
