[Iranian Media: Supreme Leader Election May Be Postponed to Next Week]
According to a report by Jinse Finance, Iran's Fars News Agency late on the night of the 3rd cited informed sources stating that the election of Iran's Supreme Leader may be postponed to next week. The sources said that the highest level of security measures has been implemented to ensure the smooth election of the Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts. The election may be held in person after the funeral of the late Supreme Leader Khamenei.
Earlier reports from Fars News Agency indicated that the office building of the Assembly of Experts in Qom, south of Iran's capital Tehran, was indeed attacked by Israel on the same day. However, no meetings were being held in the building at the time. For security reasons, members of the Assembly of Experts voted remotely. The report also mentioned that the voting process was conducted in an orderly manner under secure conditions and emphasized that the election was in its final stages, with results possibly being announced soon.
Videos released by Iranian media show that the office building of the Assembly of Experts has been completely reduced to rubble. Israeli media reported that members of the Assembly of Experts were meeting to elect a new Supreme Leader at the time, and the attack occurred during the vote-counting process. Not all members of the Assembly of Experts were present.
Khamenei was killed on February 28 in an attack by the United States and Israel on Iran. According to a report by Fars News Agency on the 3rd, Khamenei will be buried in the holy city of Mashhad, Iran, though the date of the funeral has not yet been announced.
