Vitalik Buterin, in his latest blog post, focuses on the centralization risks in Ethereum's block building process. He points out that even with the upcoming 'Glamsterdam' upgrade, which will officially introduce proposer-builder separation (PBS) and allow validators to outsource block building to market-based builders, issues like transaction censorship and excessive profit extraction could still arise if a few builders dominate the space. He proposes mechanisms like FOCIL, where randomly selected participants designate transactions that must be included in a block, rejecting the block if these transactions are missing, to reduce the likelihood of censorship by a single builder. Additionally, he suggests mitigating 'toxic MEV' risks such as frontrunning and sandwich attacks through transaction encryption, and introducing anonymized routing at the network layer to reduce the risk of intermediate nodes observing transactions prematurely.
