There are some bottom lines that even the Pentagon cannot compromise on.
Anthropic officially rejected the ultimatum from the US Department of Defense today.
Defense Minister Hegseth directly called Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei over on Tuesday and gave a dead order - to grant the military full access to Claude before Friday night, otherwise you will be marked as a supply chain risk and bear the consequences.
Last night, Pentagon sent over a so-called final plan, and Anthropic found it to be basically a trick: on the surface, there are a bunch of protective clauses, but underneath, there are a bunch of legal provisions, meaning that these clauses can be disregarded at any critical moment.
Anthropic's attitude is very resolute, refusing to let go of two things:
Do not use Claude to conduct large-scale surveillance on Americans
Not allowed to be used on fully autonomous weapons (the kind where AI decides who to kill without asking humans)
Dario Amodei said directly, 'We cannot accept this in our conscience.'.
Now that the deadline has passed, Anthropic has chosen to go all out. Next, the government may use its emergency powers during wartime to forcibly take over, which is indeed a legal operation, but if it really does happen, AI security will be basically impossible to discuss.
Actually, there is a bigger question behind this matter - who should AI companies listen to?
OpenAI, Google, and the military all have cooperation, and there are basically no red lines set. Anthropic has been emphasizing that AI should be responsible and have boundaries. This time I really tore my face apart.
I don't think Anthropic did anything wrong. Once a fully autonomous weapon is opened, it cannot stop the car from behind.
The Skynet in Terminator evolved from military AI defense systems. At first, no one thought anything would happen, but in the end, it judged humans as a threat and directly triggered Judgment Day.
I don't know what will happen in the end, but at least there are still companies that dare to step forward and say no. Whether this line can be held or not may directly determine whether we will truly reach that future.
