[CZ Warns About Risks of Wallet Upgrade Changing Derivation Path, Self-Custody Requires Caution with Software Changes]
Binance founder CZ, in response to early Bitcoin investor Davinci Jeremie’s experience of his multi-signature wallet showing a 'zero balance,' stated that if wallet software upgrades change the derivation path, it is 'very bad and scary,' calling it a 'self-custody perk.' Previously, Davinci pointed out that his 2-of-3 multi-signature wallet was unable to locate the original address and balance despite using the correct private key due to a software change in the derivation path. He eventually recovered the funds by relying on the saved old path. Several industry participants added that different standards (such as BIP44, BIP84, BIP86) generate different addresses under the same mnemonic phrase. If wallets upgrade without sufficient prompts and migration, it could lead users to mistakenly believe their assets are lost.
