L2s still make sense for gaming. In the early days of Axie, the main reason we needed to migrate off mainnet was due to complexity of the logic behind breeding transactions. So while ETH transfers were less than 10 cents at the time, breeding transactions often cost 3-5 dollars. This was when Axies were about 10 to 20 cents each so breeding was pretty difficult at the time.
