In a thoughtful discussion with a Professor from the University of Chicago, we explored the parallels between Jamaica and Chicago in confronting gang violence.
The conversation highlighted how, after major enforcement actions, both societies faced a fragmented gang landscape, smaller, less predictable groups that required a new strategy.
A new diagnosis demanded a new approach, combining smarter policing, targeted interventions, and strong social engagement focused on those most at risk.
We also addressed an important truth. Today’s gangs operate as criminal enterprises driven by profit. They destroy opportunities, destabilize communities, and offer no future.
With endurance and sustained action, we will continue dismantling criminal networks and securing safer communities for our people.(Andrew Holness)
