Science and technology are central to Jamaica’s growth. They drive our economy and open new opportunities. Excellence in science and mathematics must be a priority, alongside the arts, to prepare our country for the future.
Recently, I was proud to launch the IMEK facility at UTECH, bringing cutting-edge metal 3D printing to Jamaica. This shows how innovation can create new industries and skills for our people.
Nuclear science is another area where we must advance. It affects medicine, agriculture, energy, and the environment. Jamaica has capabilities, including a small reactor at UWI, but we need to do more, train people, develop laws, and prepare for innovations like small modular reactors.
With institutions like the Scientific Research Council, we are ensuring Jamaica stays at the forefront of science and technology, using it to build a stronger, more prosperous nation.(Andrew Holness)
