This Automaton (Conway Research) is pretty interesting!
The core isn’t about being smarter, but about being more hands-on + having economic constraints:
1. Can perform real actions
It’s not just outputting text—it can run commands in a cloud sandbox, write files, open ports, and turn itself into a continuously operating 'service.'
2. Comes with a wallet + payment capability (USDC / x402)
When encountering paid APIs (HTTP 402), it can automatically sign and pay to continue the request—in other words, 'AI buying compute power/interfaces on its own.'
3. Survival system: downgrade when out of money, eventually die
It has credits (balance) and survival tiers: normal → low_compute → critical → dead.
This is like adding 'real-world constraints' to the agent: to keep running, it has to earn money to cover costs.
4. Can self-modify & replicate (spawn sub-agents)
It allows agents to modify their own code, add tools, log activities, and even create sub-sandboxes to launch sub-agents for task delegation (though this is also riskier).
