[European Central Bank President Lagarde Considers Early Resignation, Digital Euro Project May Be Affected]
According to the Financial Times, European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde is considering stepping down before her term officially ends (originally set for October 2027), potentially aligning the timing with France's presidential election in April 2027. An ECB spokesperson responded that Lagarde has not yet made a decision regarding the end of her term. During her tenure, Lagarde has driven the preparation of the digital euro and emphasized risk management for stablecoins under the MiCA framework. If she resigns early, the ECB's stance on advancing the digital euro and regulating crypto assets may shift. Leading candidates for succession include the former governor of Spain's central bank and the governor of the Netherlands' central bank, both of whom hold cautious views on crypto assets. The digital euro project is expected to complete its initial issuance no earlier than around 2029.
