The founder of Openclaw, @ steipete, was eventually incorporated by a major company, but he did not hear the multi billion dollar selling script. Instead, Peter joined the team in person, while @ openclaw remained open source and independent. Let me briefly share two opinions: 1) Peter is truly a model developer in the era of AI agents. He did not choose to cash out and leave at the peak of his popularity, but instead joined an AI giant that has been criticized for being closed source and even becoming a "closed black box" with a vigorous open source spirit. You will feel that he is going to OpenAI with a mission to "preach and preach". OpenAI, which has always been closed source, suddenly has an additional "variable". This is really OpenAI's luck, and of course, it is only the beginning for Peter's localized AI mission; 2) It is entirely possible for OpenClaw to be acquired by Apple, Meta, or even Gemini, but Peter chose @ OpenAI instead. I feel like this is a calm strategic bet. Many people believe that integrating OpenClaw into Apple or Meta is a logical step, but I feel that Peter sees it very deeply. It does not want to become a "plugin" that adds icing on the cake to the mature software and hardware ecosystem of giants. He doesn't want to become a vassal of a wealthy family. What he wants is not a secure backing, but a reconstruction space that he needs to redefine the most. Obviously, OpenAI, which currently has the smartest brain but is extremely strategically passive and lacks localized hands and feet, is most likely to take a gamble and focus on local and privatization scenarios.
