Just saw that Polymarket launched a 5-Min Bitcoin price prediction market, and it reminded me of this post by Mr. Horseman.
Recently joined some prediction market groups and noticed that new players are generally more interested in markets like 'crypto price movements' and 'NBA games.'
These two have one thing in common: short and fast.
- Short settlement cycles: Users love markets where results come daily and payouts are quick.
- Active bots: There are always bots running strategy trades in these markets.
- Beginner-friendly: Easier to understand compared to other markets.
Polymarket is also continuing to niche down, adding more markets like 5-Min markets and even 1-Min markets.
Now I get what Mr. Horseman meant: prediction markets are more like e-commerce platforms. Political and cultural markets are for traffic generation, while traditional slot machine-style markets are for revenue generation.
It’s also easy to understand why PM recently started charging fees on sports markets. As a high-frequency slot machine category, this is a natural choice for platform monetization.
Plus, in these high-frequency trading scenarios, users aren’t sensitive to fees. It’s like meme trading—what people care about is the thrill of quick in-and-out action.
