Crypto trading platform Paxful has been fined $4 million by the U.S. Department of Justice for failing to comply with anti-money laundering regulations. U.S. prosecutors stated that Paxful knowingly allowed funds from crimes such as fraud, prostitution, and sex trafficking to be transferred through its platform for years, profiting from these activities. Between 2015 and 2022, Bitcoin transactions related to the sex trade website Backpage amounted to approximately $17 million, with the platform earning at least $2.7 million in profits. The company ceased operations in 2019 and pleaded guilty in December 2025. Initially, a fine of over $112 million was proposed, but after assessing its ability to pay, the final fine was reduced to $4 million.
