For many years, Jamaica struggled with how to manage its money, how much we earn, spend, and borrow. This made our country vulnerable whenever a crisis came.
Over the last decade, we have worked hard to change that. We now spend more responsibly, keep our debt under control, and build savings to protect the country in difficult times. This is what we mean by fiscal discipline.
Because of this, Jamaica is more stable today and better able to handle shocks.
But discipline alone is not enough. Stability must lead to growth. People want better roads, better hospitals, more jobs, and higher incomes, and rightly so.
So the focus for the next decade is to grow the economy. Create more jobs, increase production, and raise living standards, while still managing the country’s finances responsibly.(Andrew Holness)
