An article on Bitcoin mining from @tobiamure from @FXFinanceFeeds with errors that have been widely debunked several years ago this morning Here's the most glaring issues 1. "proponents claim that the technology can incentivize renewable energy development and create energy arbitrage opportunities in regions with excess electricity." Misleading characterization. It's not simply a "claim" made by "proponents"There are 9 independent peer reviewed empirical studies showing Bitcoin mining does this. source: https://x.com/DSBatten/status/1994122675455971414?s=20 2. "undeniable environmental impact due to its high energy consumption, carbon emissions, and e-waste generation" False. Cambridge's 4th mining report (April 2025) debunked the eWaste myth, showing the non-peer reviewed article that originated that claim overestimated by a factor of 1200%. Bitcoin has substantially less eWaste than other industries Source: https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/2025-04-cambridge-digital-mining-industry-report.pdf Similarly, reports on energy consumption and carbon emissions reporting came from short non-empirical commentaries from Alex de Vries which were debunked for poor data collection and systemically flawed methodologies in 2024 (source: Sai & Vranken) 3. "However, the industry is evolving. Innovations like Proof-of-Stake" False. Proof of Stake does not represent an evolution, it has been found in peer reviewed journals to represent a backward step, that removes a cryptocurrency's ability to mitigate emissions. "Adopting renewable solar energy for [bitcoin] mining could avert 50,000 tons of CO2 annually However, with Ethereum's transition to Proof of Stake …such mining setups are no longer applicable" source: https://cell.com/heliyon/fulltext/S2405-8440(24)15796-9 4. But the biggest error is error by exclusion. Nowhere in your article do you acknowledge that Bitcoin mining is 52.4% fueled by sustainable power (source: CCAF). Nor that 22 peer reviewed studies and 8 independent reports found Bitcoin mining to have numerous environmental benefits including accelerating the green energy transition, mitigating methane, stabilizing grids, obviating the need for gas peaker plants and decarbonizing industry through electrical heat recycling. source: https://x.com/DSBatten/status/2007095059963949217 You're misinforming your readers with takes that are old, and which the mainstream media stopped reporting on over two years ago due to the errors in the source studies I mention above. Do better!(Daniel Batten)
