[European Parliament Supports Issuance of Online and Offline Digital Euro] According to Bloomberg, the European Parliament passed an amendment on Tuesday supporting the issuance of a digital euro with both online and offline functionalities, diverging from the stance of the project's main legislative rapporteur, who previously only supported the offline version. The Parliament's statement emphasized that the digital euro is crucial for 'strengthening the EU's monetary sovereignty, reducing fragmentation in retail payments, and safeguarding the integrity and resilience of the single market.' The resolution highlighted that if the digitalization of payments is entirely dominated by private and non-EU entities, it could lead to new forms of exclusion risks for users and merchants. Under the legislative process, the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs will vote on the proposal in early May. If the EU Council and the European Parliament reach an agreement next year, the European Central Bank could launch a pilot in 2027 and officially roll out the digital euro in 2029.
