Musk posted on X: 'SpaceX has shifted its focus to building a self-growing city on the Moon because this goal can be achieved in less than 10 years, whereas Mars would take more than 20 years.' Musk explained, 'Travel to Mars is only possible when the planets align once every 26 months (with a journey of about 6 months), whereas we can launch missions to the Moon every 10 days (with a journey of about 2 days). This means we can complete the construction of a lunar city at a much faster iteration speed compared to a Martian city.' This shift marks a significant change in Musk's long-standing public stance of prioritizing Mars as SpaceX's main destination. Just last year, Musk stated that the company planned to launch an unmanned Mars mission by the end of 2026.
